The person that invents the list puts his or her favorites on to start it rolling, and writes the title and parameters as a subscript to tell us what is allowed and what isn't. After that, anyone can add a title. Above the list and slightly to the right, there's a tab that says 'Add Books to This List.' When you click that, your own list of shelves becomes available to you on the left. ![]() Some lists--and happily, this is one--have an automatic system that lets you know which of the books you've listed on your shelves are eligible (first published in 2017) and which are not, so that you don't vote for a book that doesn't qualify. For those that read advance copies for review, there is a bit of a lag time before we can vote for books about to be published, but otherwise it works well. Removing books from the lists can be done by librarians. We are volunteers. There are strict rules, however, and anyone that thinks to remove a title because they dislike the choice rather than because it falls outside the list's parameters--in this case, if a book first published in an earlier year snuck in, for example, I could remove it--can lose her membership; we are a careful lot. We can also have the system check for duplicates on some, but not all of the lists. (Don't even ask; it's a sore spot for many of us!) The rest is mostly democratic. People vote for the titles they like in their order of preference, so your very favorite book of 2017 (so far) gains 100 points in the total votes; second choice 99, and so on down to 1 lonely point if you use all 100 votes. I have read more than one book based on its tendency to linger at the top of a lot of these lists. Were it not for Listopias (though not this one), I would probably never have read The Glass Castle. A list in progress the way this one is proves especially interesting, because as more excellent books are published, I revisit my votes, demoting some titles on my current list in order to bump up my new favorites to the places I believe they rightfully deserve. By the end of the year, the list will be a lot meatier and more interesting. So go for it. If you don't see books you like, go ahead and add the ones you think deserve to be here. If you get excited about the chance to promote a book or two that you aren't seeing publicized, invite friends to vote. I find these lists to be a strangely relaxing form of recreation, which is how I come to be typing this at 12:33 AM. Go ahead and give it a shot. ![]() You only live once. If you decide later you don't want your choices posted, it's easy to remove a whole set of votes with one click of your button. What could possibly go wrong (wince). But seriously, these are just pure fun.

They examined life expectancy and infant mortality—two well-established measures of overall public health. () In the early ’90s, the study authors found, the region’s infant mortality rate was about identical to that of the rest of the country, but between 2009 and 2013, it was 16 percent higher. Similarly, in 1992, the average Appalachian had a life expectancy of about 75.2 years, just half a year shorter than the average American. By the 2009 to 2013 study period, the disparity had grown to 2.4 years. ![]() In the intervening time—nearly two decades that saw the advent of DNA sequencing and other medical advancements—life expectancy increased by 2.4 years for women outside of Appalachia, but by just a fraction of a year for Appalachian women. The numbers are even starker when stratified by race. In the most recent years studied, a black man in Appalachia could expect to die about three years earlier than a white man in Appalachia and a year younger than a black man elsewhere. A black man living in a high-poverty area in Appalachia could expect to die a full 13 years younger than a typical white woman in a low-poverty area elsewhere in America. That’s roughly between the United States and Rwanda. ![]() Health Affairs Most of this gap is attributable to deaths among people younger than 65. Half of the life-expectancy gap is attributable to smoking, and another 6 percent could be explained by drug overdoses. The rest of the gap could be explained, in large part, by ailments like cancer and heart disease—to which poor nutrition and obesity can contribute. “For all of these things—obesity, smoking, and health-care access—the disparities between Appalachia and the rest of the country have been growing,” Singh said. To him, the poor health is a symptom of joblessness, social isolation, and the attendant psychological distress. “Calorie-dense foods are much less expensive, and they tend to be less healthy, which then contributes to obesity, which contributes to an increased risk of hypertension,” Kogan said. And that, in turn, increases a pregnant woman’s risk of having her infant die. This study echoes other recent findings that paint a of the health of low-income Americans. It is a celebration for students graduating high school, but it is not just school leavers who enjoy the festivities, with hundreds of thousands of revelers of all ages gathering along the embankments of the Neva River to enjoy the spectacle, and continuing the street party into the early hours of the next morning. On the night of 25 June this year, the Swedish brig Tre Kronor will don full scarlet rig and sail along the Neva, accompanied by a grand fireworks display and a host of other entertainments. History The ship with scarlet sails is drawn from a tale by Soviet fantasy author Alexander Grin about a young girl with modest prospects for life who lives in a sleepy fishing village but dreams of seeing the world. One day she is told by a wizard that a ship with red sails will come and take her away; on recounting this prophesy to the people around her, she is scorned and ostracized, but she continues to believe the old man's words. One day, a nobleman's son and merchant ship captain passing through the village, sees her from a distance and falls in love with her; upon inquiring about her with the locals, he hears of her tale, and decides to make it come true, so as to get her to sail away with him. Thus the ship with scarlet sails floating along the Neva each year represents an allegoric encouragement to young people to believe in their dreams. ![]() ![]() ![]() Comedy In Patrick Kong's latest movie 'Never Too Late', the main characters (Alex Fong and Cecilia So) got lost in their relationship because of their timidity and inferiority. They could do so the right way, taking care to simplify the code without harming the country’s already stretched finances. Or they could hypocritically balloon the debt to pay for tax cuts, nullifying the benefits of the rewrite by plunging the country into dangerous fiscal territory. A plan before the Senate,, would do tax reform the wrong way. Any Republican who ever breathed a word of concern about the debt when Democrats were in charge has no excuse to support this plan. They should reject the budget outline. The reason is simple: The Senate budget plan would allow lawmakers to add a whopping $1.5 trillion to the debt over a decade in order to cut taxes. Backers of the idea insist that the impact would not be as bad as this top-line figure would suggest. The way the Congressional Budget Office calculates the budget baseline is not realistic,, and must be adjusted. Tax cuts pay for themselves, they add. In other words, their response is a combination of budget gimmickry and magical thinking. There is no credible model showing that a big tax cut would pay for itself. The country’s debt already equals nearly 80 percent of the economy. Large numbers of baby boomers are retiring and will demand expensive old-age benefits. Health-care costs continue to rise. Spending on entitlements and debt service promises to crowd out investments in infrastructure, education and every other public need. Tighter military spending is already affecting the readiness of U.S. The last thing the Senate should do is make these problems worse. ![]() While imperfect in several ways, the points to a better path. It calls for tax reform that is revenue-neutral. Under this proposal, Republicans would slash corporate and personal income-tax rates, but they would have to pay for them, ideally offsetting those cuts by eliminating tax deductions and other loopholes. The result would be a simpler code with fewer twists and turns that distort where people and companies invest. The country would become more competitive relative to other nations with simpler tax codes and more favorable corporate rates. And there would be no net impact on the debt.
